Group Lecture 3: Marketing

The third group lecture that we attended was over marketing. There were 2 speakers who both had graduated or were very close to graduating from Tennessee Tech. The first speaker told us what she does on a day to day basis and talked about the many varieties of work that she may do because of her major and job title. The second speaker told us how much Tech had helped him and how he sat down and made a schedule with Mrs. Galloway his freshman year and was a few weeks away from finishing that schedule. He has major job offers one being Bridgestone. He really let us know that we had what we needed here at Tech to receive a good job after college as long as we worked hard and came up with a plan.

College of Business Organizations

During our class period we went to different rooms and heard from three different business organizations who talked to us about what they do and their differences. For some reason the SAM group business has stuck in my head because that is the one that interested me the most. Don't get me wrong, all of the groups were great, but the SAM group was the one that seemed to hit home with me. If I chose to get into an organization here at tech it would be this group because I have always thought about the exact things that they talked about during our meeting.

College of Business Organization Meeting

I attended the organization meeting that dealt with accounting. I have never really considered the accounting side of business, so after the meeting I didn't really know what to think. I still don't think that I am interested in the accounting side of business but I was very impressed in how the man that spoke had his plan from freshman year to senior year already thought out and well-planned. I wish I could start doing that now, but I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life as far as a job goes. The future is blind for me right now. The main thing that I took away from that meeting was how important it is to have a plan and be happy in whatever I choose to do with my life. So, in a sense, that meeting really helped me out.

Fine Arts

I'll be the first to admit that I don't like art and have never taken the time to appreciate art which I have missed out on. From the outside it looked as if there were just a bunch of pictures that were thrown together or just slapped on a piece of paper. I was wrong. When I went inside there were detailed expressions on the people's faces. It made me realize that maybe the artist are trying to talk about their lives or display what is going on in their lives. It kind of made me think more about art than I ever have before. I think the main reason that I have never enjoyed art is because I am not good at it. This fine arts area made me start to enjoy something that others are good at that I am not good at.

Community Service Project Warrior Dash

For my community service I chose to participate in the Warrior Dash in Manchester, Tennessee. This was the first time that the Warrior Dash has come to Tennessee. I honestly didn't know what to expect because I had never run a 5k before. I knew what a 5k was, but I have never participated in one. We had to climb walls, jump on cars, crawl in mud, and even jump on hay bells. There were 10 obstacles overall as they finished with a huge mud pit with barbwire just above the mud so that you had to crawl in the mud. At the very end, people donated their shoes that they ran the 5k in to the poor. There were awards given and money donated to those living in poverty. It was more than I expected and I am very glad that I participated in it. I never knew that giving and community service could be that much fun! It really was a challenge and I got the opportunity to give at the same time.

Thanksgiving

Before coming to Tennessee Tech I was really confused and worried that I would make the wrong college choice, but I was wrong. I am so happy that I chose to come to Tennessee Tech. I have had more fun then I could have ever imagined and have met some people here that I know I will be close with for the rest of my life. It is hard for me to talk about one thing that I am thankful for when it comes to Tennessee Tech because I am thankful for it all and the opportunity to come to this school.

TTU Career Fair

The Tennessee Tech Career Fair is a great experience and opportunity for students to see what they are really interested in as far as a career goes. I seemed to be more interested in the engineering businesses. I have had an idea that thats what I may want to do, but this career fair really helped me a lot. However, I did notice that most of the companies were mainly interested in talking to the juniors and seniors. I understood that though because they are the closest ones to being ready for an actual job. One of the things that I will remember for the next several years is to dress nicely when I go to that to make good impressions. I heard several companies comment on how the student was dressed and was impressed that the student went out of his way to dress nicely. First impressions are very important because you will never know who is watching or who you will come in contact with.

Tennessee Tech Football Game

The game last Thursday was something that I had been looking forward to for a long time. I went to a small private school so the fan base was not as big as what any college team has. I did go to Vanderbilt football games though. The reason I was so excited for this game was because this was going to be my first football game as a college student. I wanted to be a part of the madness. The Golden Eagles played a great game as they beat Maryville College 56-7. My player of the game was wide receiver #3. Although Maryville is a small school, it was a good game to get some motivation back after a tough loss to Iowa. I am extremely excited to see how we do in the OVC this year. Go Golden Eagles!

Career Assessment

Upon doing the career assessment assignment, I found out some pretty interesting things about myself. I took the interests test, the skills test, and the personality test. The interests test was not a surprise to me. My results showed that my highest interests were business and engineering which is what I am having trouble deciding between for what my major should be. Education was close behind as well.
The skills test surprised me because it gave me six categories for my results. The categories were: working with people, working with hands or equipment, communicating, organizing information, working with math, and special activities. The common theme in all of these was following instructions and being able to manage my time.
The personality test was interesting to me as well. There were six categories and it told me which three I was most closely related with. The group that I am most like is the realistic group. The second group was the investigative group. The final group was the enterprising group. It is weird to take tests and see results about yourself, but it will help me choose the career that is best for me and who I am.

8-31-11 Group Lecture Blog

The main focus of the group lecture was the value and importance of a college education. A main point of the lecture was that it is very difficult to find a job without a college degree. Furthermore, if we have intentions of having families of our own then we need to make sure that we get a degree to ensure that we may be able to get a job to provide for our families. The fact was stated that 1/2 of the college students eventually drop out. When people drop out and then try to get jobs, they will need government assistance to get a job which affects those who have jobs and a college degree. So it is in our best interest now to help those who need it and connect with the people who will help us graduate.
